The Skoda Superb would like a word.

Kinja'd!!!

Tell me straight, is that not vast and tidy for a sedan?

"But no!" you say, "that's not a sedan. It's a hatchback!"

The Superb's got the sedan bit covered too!

Kinja'd!!!

Two-way rear tailgate!

Because engineering.

Also, pretty practical, allows for easier loading, etc.

Yet another reason Skoda should come to the US!!!! It's a shame no one would buy it...

It comes with a stick, too. If I ever get rich, I'll find a way to import this somehow.

The sedan is dead, because MOST sedans DON'T DO THIS. Maybe if more of them did...

I am pretty much done with trunk lids, if there is a good hatch-back alternative. The larger opening is simply more versatile and practical.

I honestly think the Mazda 6 5-doors were the best looking sedans that were really hatchbacks.

So... why not just have a hatch? I understand it from a why not perspective, but it doesn't seem to solve any real problem.

Wouldn't this still technically be a hatchback, not a sedan?

Who cares, it also comes as a brown, AWD, Turbo, Manual, Diesel Wagon.

Put it this way - it's two cars in one. On one side, you've got a well-equipped, leather-lined barge that maintains the proportions of a sedan. On the other, you've got a reasonably priced, 4WD, manual, absolutely huge cargo carrier to take everything Ikea flat pack furniture has to throw at it. The TwinDoor as it's called, just makes life easier when you need it to be.

It was sold alongside the "regular" sedan and wagon, so most didn't know it existed, or have seen them but not known it.

"...just makes life easier when you need it to be."

And harder when you don't want it to be? I'm not trying to troll here, but it just seems kind of pointless. Also, your entire description applies to the Mazda 6 hatch as well. Looks identical to the sedan, but has a hatch with a removable parcel tray.

I say if the cargo bay is open to the rest of the car, and it has a lift hatch, it's a hatchback. If it has a trunk that's separated from the cabin and a trunk lid, it's a sedan. This particular car just happens to be a hatch with two methods of opening.

I have had two Subarus with trunk lids, a 2005 Legacy GT sedan, and a '92 SVX coupe... both of them have decent interior trunk volume, that wasn't really a problem.

The problem is... the trunk lid openings were so small, that large boxes that would fit in the volume, wouldn't fit past the small trunk lid opening. Lots of smaller parcels could be loaded in sequence, but the edges of the opening were the limitation, not the enclosed volume.

That and the Legacy's rear seats didn't fold, because someone at Subaru didn't figure they needed to, until they changed that again in 2007.

Part of me wishes I had gotten the wagon... or that the competitor Mazdaspeed 6 AWD Turbo had been offered in the 5-door sedan body, rather than the 4-door body.

Depends on your definition of hatchback, as either an exclusive body style (usually a boxy car with a vertical rear hatch, but a short rear overhang, rather than a wagon or shooting brake with a longer rear overhang and longer roof. A Hatchback like a VW Golf, for instance.

The other alternative is where "hatchback" is used as a descriptor of any body style type, just solely describing them as having a rear hatch that is hinged at the roof for a wide opening.

This Skoda Superb, and others, would be a hatchback sedan, as opposed to a hatchback coupe, a hatchback CUV or SUV, or Van, as opposed to a rear side-hinged door, dutch-door or double door (dual side hinged rear doors) variant.

Skoda Superb is still a sedan... with a hatchback, like some others, while most sedans have trunks, rather than hatches.

I don't see how it can be any harder when you don't want it to be unless you've got limbs made of muesli that can't close a velcro flap.

Think whatever you'd like to think, but I personally believe it still redeems features of a saloon whilst having a huge hatch. In normal saloon boot mode, the occupants are still shielded from the wild outdoors.

I'm just saying that I don't see any advantage to using the sedan trunk instead. I think it's a stretch to say the whole point is to keep the passengers warm or something when you put something in the trunk, because if that's the case, they're really not going to like it when you open the door to get in.

Again, I don't mean to be a douche here, I really don't. I really just don't understand why this would be worth the extra cost to put in, except that it's just a gimmick, and not actually useful.

That's fair. Like the previous gen Mazda 6 that looked identical to the sedan, but had a lift hatch. I suppose I would still call that a hatchback though, just because you can remove the parcel tray and fit taller cargo, or have it truly open back when you put the seats down.

I feel like the Superb would be 100% as functional with just the hatch.

The Opel Insignia Hatchback would like to have a word as well. But it doesn't have the two stage boot lid
